If you just a tourist you must go there either. Sukhumvit shows what's best in Bangkok, like great tailors, restaurants from all around the world and great street food. Dark side are obviously pimps. Prostitues are not very intrusive, they are just waiting for the client and if you say "no", they will leave you alone. My mrs was offered their services couple of times, what was quite funny.

They do a very good manicure and pedicure. Good prices THB for mani or pedi as of April and hygienic. They use clean instruments for every customer. They mainly cater to locals as in Thai with money to spend , but are tourist friendly. No need to ask at hotels if they can fix you, as they will probably have their own spa with very inflated prices or recommend one that does the same.
